Bd wants to invest in trilateral hydropower project

Bangladesh wants to invest US$ 1 billion in the 1125-MW Dorjilung hydropower project, to be built in Lhuentse district of Bhutan, under trilateral cooperation with India and Bhutan.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Tuesday put particular emphasis on joint development of hydropower projects and operationalisation of BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement under the framework of sub-regional cooperation, reports UNB.

“There’s tremendous potential in the region and the prospect of sub-regional growth quadrangle in the form of BBIN will be able to bring mutual benefits to our people,” he said when newly appointed Bhutanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Sonam Tobden Rabgye met him at his office.

During the meeting, Minister Ali recalled his diplomatic assignment in Bhutan in the 80s.

According to the Foreign Ministry, they also discussed issues of mutual interest.

The Bhutanese envoy briefed the Foreign Minister about the developments in Bhutan in various sectors, including the hydropower projects, BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement and the progress on operationalisation of flights between two countries by US-Bangla airlines.

He expressed Bhutan’s interest to import internet bandwidth from Bangladesh.

The Foreign Minister assured the new Ambassador of all-out cooperation in discharging his duties during his tenure in Bangladesh.
