Finance Minister expects strong capital market by 2020

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith expressed his hope that Bangladesh would have a strong capital market by 2020 which can provide the necessary investment for the government.

“It is my belief… We can make that happen in three years,” the finance minister said on Sunday at a programme at Midas Centre in Dhanmondi of Dhaka on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

In the past 20 years, Bangladesh’s growth has not dropped below 6 per cent, which few countries can boast of, the finance minister said.

“It is my belief, that if we can continue the work we have done so far and make a few necessary changes, we can open many new horizons by 2020,” Muhith said.

The event was organised by Midas Investment Ltd to celebrate the launch of its merchant banking operations.

The finance minister also praised the NGO, first established in the 1980s.

"Midas used to be run with foreign assistance,” he said. “Then, at one point, the heads of the company decided it should become self-financed.”

“Now, many people say they will become self-sufficient. But Midas has managed it.”
