Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected as president of Bangladesh Awami League on Sunday.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was named as new general secretary of the party.
The announcement was made after much speculation and debate at the second session of 20th national council of the ruling political party of Bangladesh.
The session was held at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in the capital, report agencies.
Syeda Sazeda Chowdhury proposed Hasina`s name as the president.
Election Commissioner Yousuf Hossain Humayun declared her re-elected as there was no other candidate.
Syed Ashraful Islam, who served as the general secretary for two terms, proposed Obaidul Quader as his successor, which was supported by Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
Obaidul Quader was also elected unopposed.
Syed Ashraful Islam was made the party’s acting general secretary during the emergency period in 2007.
Later, the 18th council session of the party approved Syed Ashraful Islam`s appointment in 2009 and he was reassigned the post in the 19th council session in 2012.
Sheikh Hasina became the president of the party in 1981 and since then she remained at the helm of the party which led the country`s liberation war in 1971.
