MP Tulip Siddiq has been appointed to the shadow cabinet of UK Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
She will be joining the Shadow Minister of Education Angela Rayner’s team of four as the Shadow Minister of Early Years education.
Tulip was elected MP for London’s Hampstead and Kilburn constituency in May 2015.
The daughter of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana was formerly part of the UK Parliament’s Women and Equalities Committee.
She had served as Councillor for the Regent Park constituency before her election last May.
Tulip had also worked as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Corbyn’s Shadow Minister of Culture Media and Sport Michael Dugher.
“Delighted to join the brilliant Angela Rayner in Shadow Education team – we will battle to hold government to account on education and early years,” Tulip tweeted.
Tulip’s appointment comes after a shadow cabinet shake-up by Jeremy Corbyn following his re-election as Labour leader.
Corbyn was first elected to the Labour leadership by a groundswell of popular support in 2015, taking 59.5 percent of the vote.
After the UK’s historic Brexit vote Labour ministers passed a motion of no-confidence against Corbyn and several resigned from his shadow cabinet, forcing him to call a Labour leadership election in August.
Corbyn was re-elected against challenger Owen Smith in the election by a 61.8 per cent to 38.2 per cent landslide.
Tulip had supported Smith in the election, but accepted Corbyn’s leadership after the vote, according to bdnews24.com.
